Open vs Closed

Here is a short and easy read about the difference between Open and Closed source technology. It gives a few basic characteristics of both and then discusses what purpose each one serves. http://www.extropia.com/aboutus/opensourcetech.html
To me, it seems as if open source is more of a community of programers learning from one another and attempting to develop quality software.

Tim, I have always been a big fan of open source software such as Firefox, and OpenOffice. On the plus side, all sorts of 3rd party extensions have been created since the source code is open. However, the programs might not always work as expected. Even though I use Open Office, it frustrates me due to its quirkiness.

Tim, interesting resource. Can you give examples on open source technology and applications and how they are being used in education? Jing

Many westerners thinks that free and Open software does not work as well as those commercial and charged software. Do you think so? I think some open sourse are better than commercial.
eg. Firefox vs IE
media coder VS other transcode software.
